Abstract

Introduction and objective: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease closely related to obesity, and it is because of this correlation that the term Diabesity has emerged to cover these two epidemics of the 21st century, which have become a worldwide public health problem. The objective of this review is to analyze studies related to lifestyle modifications, which are based on dietary changes and the adoption of physical exercise, which contribute to the metabolic control of glucose and weight.

Method: A systematic review was carried out of articles published between 2015 and the present, in Scopus and PubMed databases. This review was performed according to the quality standards for systematic reviews in accordance with the PRISMA P methodology.

Results: Metabolic control of glucose and weight through intensive lifestyle intervention in both physical exercise and diet in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity.

Conclusions: An intensive lifestyle intervention is advisable and constitutes a powerful primary alternative to counteract diabesity, as a first therapeutic option when initiating treatment and at the same time preventing the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus in people with obesity.
