Abstract
This is the first cohort follow-up study carried out at the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Costa Rica (FDUCR). The aim is to determine the terminal efficiency, lag and dropout in the 2010 cohort in the FDUCR, to develop strategies to improve academic management. A census of the 2010 cohort was conducted from March 2010 to March 2020. The data was collected from the Student Applications System, physical records and lists of graduate students from 2015 to March 2020. The selection criteria included all the records of the students who were admitted and completed their enrollment in Dentistry at the UCR, in 2010. The cohort is the set of students who began their studies in the same academic year and semester, comply with the same selection measures and study the same study plan, they are followed in time until they present the event under study: graduation, desertion or until the completion date of the investigation. The data was analyzed with descriptive statistics. The results indicate that the terminal efficiency is 8,5%, 50% have graduated with a delay, 9,5% of the students remain in their degree and the dropout rate is 32%. It is recommended to search for the causes of these results in order to improve these indicators.
