Abstract

Blood transfusion is a commonly used procedure; in which the patient receives blood or its components in order to improve the quality of life and that this contributes to the total or partial recovery of the health of those patients who make use of this practice. This procedure is meant to save lives when it is lost in surgery, in diseases, in bleeding disorders, injuries or when a disease prevents the body from producing blood or some components. Transfusions can be from each of its components (red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma, and platelets) or they can be transfusions that contain all the components (it’s not that common). Blood transfusions are generally uncomplicated, although risks and adverse effects, have been shown. The liver, cardiovascular, hematologic and renal organs are those that are compromised by transfusion complications.
