Abstract

Introduction: Addressing the issue of Health Promotion and particularly its background is a matter of permanent validity, given its importance in the light of international public health policies raised since the twentieth century. In order for the Health Promotion to continue strengthening, the creation of favorable health conditions is required in which health professionals play a transcendental role, which goes through their academic training, continuing with their professional performance and citizen participation.

Objective: To present a critical review of the background of health promotion and the role of health professionals in their development.

Method: A review of articles, books and official documents of international health organizations was conducted, published in Spanish and English. The terms "health promotion", "health personnel" and "public health" were used in Spanish and English. The databases consulted were PubMed, SciELO and Science Direct.

Conclusions: The findings show how Health Promotion has been framed in criticism and debates since its inception, which demonstrates its importance and validity over time; Health professionals, as the main actors in health promotion, should receive since their professional education the necessary bases for their professional and personal application.
