Abstract

Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is one of the main respiratory infectious pathologies, with a worldwide distribution and morbimortality. It is characterized by lung parenchyma involvement, caused by agents outside the hospital setting, such as bacteria, virus or fungi. Its average incidence is 9.2 to 33 per thousand inhabitants, where people older than 65 years are the most affected. It is estimated that, at least, 10% to 20% of the cases will require an intensive care unit management, according to individual risk stratification. The diagnosis is clinical, and it is confirmed by imaging studies, biochemical analysis and microbiological testing. The initial treatment is established empirically, according to the clinical history, previous use of antibiotics and the sensitivity pattern of the country or center.
